BEIJING, China: China set a new tourism record, as the Chinese made some 230 million trips over the extended May Day holiday.

This surpassed the number of Chinese traveling during pre-coronavirus pandemic levels, according to official estimates. However, total spendings by tourists was lower than in the past.

China's May Day holiday was May 1-5, in which people travel throughout the country. Earlier in the year, the public was urged to not leave home during the Lunar New Year in mid-February due to the Covid pandemic.

The 230 million trips figure is 3.2 percent higher than pre-pandemic levels, when the public returned to their hometowns as well as to popular locations, such as tropical Hainan and Tibet.

Officials noted, however, that May Day tourism revenues were only 77 percent of pre-virus levels at $17.5 billion.

Earlier, China State Railway Group announced plans to carry 17.2 million passengers home on the final day of the holiday, the Xinhua news agency reported.
